EASA Part-66 Category B1.1 License

Mechanical Maintenance

Category B1.1 is for Mechanical Engineers in aircraft maintenance, focusing on airframes, engines, and mechanical systems.

  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have an engineering degree (Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, etc.), or an equivalent technical qualification.
  • Practical Experience: Typically, 2 years of on-the-job experience in aircraft maintenance under the supervision of a licensed engineer is required.
  • Candidates must complete the 14 required Part-66 modules, which cover topics such as:
    Aircraft general knowledge
    Aerodynamics and aircraft structures
    Engines and powerplants
    Maintenance practices and safety
Electrical systems and avionics (limited to mechanical systems)
  • Candidates must pass written exams for each of the 14 Part-66 B1.1 modules. These exams test more advanced theoretical knowledge compared to Category A1.
  • Candidates must complete OJT (usually 1-2 years) in an EASA-approved organization. OJT includes practical work on aircraft under supervision to gain hands-on experience.
  • A logbook is maintained to track the candidate’s practical experience during OJT. Each maintenance task must be signed off by a licensed engineer or supervisor.
  • After successfully passing the exams and completing OJT, candidates can apply for the Part-66 B1.1 license.
